A few days ago, we asked our Facebook friends to post their video production questions. One response we got was about vlogging. Vlogging, if you don’t know, is a video form of blogging.
Q: How long should a weekly vlog (video blog) post be? And are there some standard ways to optimize the lighting, sound and location I use in my house?
A: A vlog post, like any other web video, should not exceed 2-3 minutes. I know that doesn’t sound like a long time, but the next time you’re viewing a web video, notice how long it takes you to hover over the control bar to see how much longer until the video is done. Most people get that urge between 1:30 and 2 minutes into the video.
Sound and lighting are probably the most important things to consider when creating a vlog. Use a well-lit room and if this is something you’re going to do consistently, invest in a small, compact photo/video light kit. Use a microphone. Room noise/hum is distracting. Your audience should be focused on what you are saying, not distracted by poor quality.
